Javiera Roa

VioDemos PhD student. Social Worker and Master in Social Work from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Phd. candidate in Sociology at the Universidad Alberto Hurtado. She is a doctoral scholarship holder of the National Agency for Research and Development (ANID). Member of the Network of Researchers in Childhood.

Her doctoral research is entitled “Infancias a la sombra: el régimen punitivo penitenciario en la vida cotidiana de niños y niñas en el contexto neoliberal chileno”, where she conducts an ethnography involved with children in populations of the city of Santiago.

It explores the technologies through which the penitentiary-punitive regime, as a neoliberal form of poverty management, affects the daily lives of children living in territories that concentrate poor families in the city. It also investigates how these technologies are perceived, suffered and resisted by children.
