Emiliana Cereceda

VioDemos PhD student. Anthropologist from the University of Chile and Master in Material and Visual Culture at University College London (UK), she is a PhD student at the same university, scholarship holder of the National Agency for Research and Development, ANID.

Her doctoral research, entitled “The Scars of Fire: an ethnography of firescapes in Central Chile”, explores life after the February 2024 arson in the Valparaíso Region, focusing on how the everyday engagements of Quilpué’s toma de terreno residents with the physical and affective remnants of the flames transform and reactivate histories of economic and socio-environmental deprivation. Her research addresses the intersection between materiality and temporality, from three registers: living among and with remains; reconstructing houses, neighborhoods and lives; and affectivity of survival. Her project seeks to contribute to anthropological debates on material culture and temporality in disastrous contexts.
