The “Buried Mirror”: History and Chile’s New Constitution

Autor/es

Fernando Pairican

Resumen

The recent process to draft a new constitution in Chile debated the notion of nation in a country that has been reticent to problematize it. This debate is prevalent in Latin America, and dates from the independence wars in the nineteenth century, going through the different national projects up to the twenty first century. Native peoples have participated in these debates through military resistance as was the case in the nineteenth century, or seeking recognition as distinct cultures in the twentieth century.
